Planning a Home Office

Increasing numbers of people perform some of their work duties from a home office. Computers and the Internet have linked us to the world of information technology. Even if you only need a space for conducting the business of running your home, you want that space to be comfortable.

You've heard interior designers use the term, "function over form". What this simply means is that you want the space to be organized and to work for you. If you have an extra bedroom, it can easily be turned into a combination office and guest room. The proper work areas and a fold out couch chosen carefully will make this multi purpose room a pleasure.

The first task is to measure accurately the space you have to work with. You don't want to fall in love with something, only to find it won't fit the area you had allocated. You will also want to confirm the measurements of any equipment you will be using such as computers. Think about your comfort level. Do you need to have a large area to spread out papers? Do you spend a lot of time on the phone? Will you be using equipment such as a scanner or a printer? Think about storage. There are usually a multitude of paper to deal with- files, mail, and other documents. Organizing these documents will keep things tidy while increasing your efficiency.

Of course, a desk with drawers is always a good choice. An alternate idea might be to paint two two-drawer filing cabinets the color of your choice and rest a piece of wood across them to create a desk top. A few baskets or desk trays will handle the clutter of the workspace. If there is room, a bookshelf is a great addition to handle papers and books that you want to keep nearby.

There are many easy to assemble pieces which offer increased flexibility. These are free standing, sometimes on rollers, and usually very affordable. These can often be found at your home improvement store, or for even more convenience, shop by catalog.

If you are working with limited space, you will need to be more creative. If you have only a corner in the kitchen or other room, a single file drawer with wall hung shelving might fit your needs. If bill paying is the extent of your homework, look for portable storage units made of wicker or wood. They are small and attractive and can be placed on a table or out of sight, when not in use. They have slots for incoming mail, writing tools, check books and other necessary items.

Whether your office is large or small, personalize as much as possible. This makes working more pleasurable. Use your imagination. A favorite photo, a small lamp, or a vase of flowers can brighten your day. Instead of purchasing the usual bulletin board, you might want to make your own by covering a board with fabric. Criss-cross strips of ribbon which can then be attached with tacks. Insert your notices and mementos between the ribbon strips.
